Post-ul este un pic mai vechi, am reusit sa il recuperez, desi am avut probleme cu bazele de date.

Acum cateva zile am auzit doua persoane discutand despre Firefox Download Day. Firefox 3 fusese descarcat de un numar impresionant de persoane, si pe site-ul de download erau afisate rezultatele si tarile unde Firefox fusese descarcat de mai multe persoane. Unul din cei doi tipi il intreaba pe celalalt daca apare si Romania pe acolo, la care cel din urma raspunde ca Romania-i o tara de cacat, si ca nimeni nu a auzit de ea. Genul asta de persoane care nu vad nimic bun in tara proprie, si doar se vaita fara a incerca sa schimbe ceva, predomina din pacate in Romania.

Desi generatiei tinere (persoanele intre 16-25 de ani, sa zicem) li se tot arunca in fata mizerii, am observat ca mentalitatea ‘plangacioasa’ predomina la cei care au trait mai mult in perioada comunista. Nu arunc vina in TOTALITATE pe regimul comunist pentru felul asta de a gandi. Omul trebuie motivat in permanenta. Daca este lasat sa lancezeasca, atunci devine unul din cei care doar se plang. Te poti auto-motiva, daca iti doresti cu adevarat. Nu-i nevoie intotdeauna de o alta persoana care sa incerce sa te aduca pe “drumul cel bun” (nu stiu daca exista cu adevarat asa ceva).

Eu unul cred ca ar trebui sa ne schimbam cu totii felul de a gandi. Nu putem sa ii schimbam deodata pe ceilalti. Intai trebuie sa ne schimbam propria persoana, schimbare ce ii va motiva pe ceilalti sa incerce sa-si imbunatateasca imaginea proprie.

Schimbarea se face de la mic la mare. Nu poti incerca sa schimbi o masa de oameni daca nu te poti schimba pe tine. Cand romanii isi vor revizui atitudinea si vor gandi ca se poate mai bine, si trebuie sa fac ceva pentru asta, Romania nu va mai fi una din tarile cu o imagine proasta, atat afara cat si aici.

I think that the whole attitude behind the “my operating system is better” idea is pretty childish. Everyone remembers the days in our childhood when we had some toys and argued with other kids that we have better toys. Most of the times, we got into a fight and not the guy with better toys won, but the most powerful.

Moving to present days, I think that the most powerful guy is the one with better marketing. For example, Microsoft gives s**t if there are good or bad news about them. There are only news from their point of view. Their visibility keeps increasing and the same thing is true about Apple.

These two companies don’t use the meritocratic system that’s being used by Linux (or GNU/Linux, depending on how you prefer to call it). Although they are not sharing their knowledge, they seem to have a bigger market share than the more “shareaholic” open source communities. Now, I was wondering if there’s a way to mix meritocracy with good marketing strategies. Any ideas?

La recomandarea unui prieten din Marea Britanie, am luat cartea Getting Things Done de David Allen. Nu am avut timp sa o citesc in totalitate, doar am rasfoit-o. Cartea are trei parti si in jur de 260 de pagini. Nu e o lectura grea, asa ca ar putea fi citita în metrou, in pauza de masa sau oriunde doreste fiecare. S-ar putea ca unele lucruri sa vi se para banale – si chiar sunt – iar altele pur si simplu… enervante. Totusi, încercati cartea asta si luati din ea ceea ce vi se pare ca va poate folosi.

I changed my job a couple of weeks ago and now I’m working on a Mac. As I previously had a PC with Ubuntu 8.04 installed, I always thought that the Mac guys were snobs, who tend to avoid other persons and make their own clique. This is not true as I recently found out. Actually, I can say that the GNOME guys should’ve thought better when they copied some parts from OS X and called them innovative works.

For example, you know the small bar that’s present in Nautilus when you go to the trash can, right? The same bar is there on Mac too. Still talking about the visual side, we can find the mac-ish progress bar/status style in GNOME too.

I really hate the following way of thinking: “It’s BAD when Apple and Microsoft take stuff from open source project, but it’s GOOD when we take from them!” Open up your eyes guys and try to make something original if you want to compete with these two giants! And I’m looking especially at you Mark Shuttleworth!
